75th Anniversary of the Deportation of Crimean Tatars

Oct. 24, 2019, 2:00-3:15pm (RSVP requested)
5th Floor Conference Room, Wilson Center, 1300 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Washington, DC

Join the Wilson Center's Kennan Institute for a talk with Gulnara Bekirova and Brian Williams on the history of the deportation of Crimean Tatars and the contemporary issues that Crimean Tatars face.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the forcible deportation of Crimean Tatars from their homes in Crimea by Joseph Stalin in 1944. Crimean Tatars were not allowed to return to Crimea until the late 1980s. The annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014 presented the community with new challenges. This talk will focus on issues such as these.

RSVP is requested; information can be found at this link.

Speakers:

Gulnara Bekirova, historian and editor, ATR, Kyiv, Ukraine

Brian Williams, professor, Islamic history, University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth
