Join Columbia's Harriman Institute for a book talk with Harriman faculty member Keith Gessen on his novel "A Terrible Country." "A Terrible Country" is set in Moscow in 2008-2009, shortly after the war with Georgia, at the dawn of the global financial crisis and the optimism of the early Medvedev years. The novel's narrator, a frustrated Slavic Studies postdoc living in New York, returns to the city of his birth to take care of his grandmother and jumpstart his academic career. Instead he plays hockey, becomes disgusted with Russian-style capitalism, and falls in with a group of leftist activists who are working to overthrow the system.
Speaker:
Keith Gessen, assistant professor of journalism, Columbia University School of Journalism
