Russian independent media has progressively come under fire, with independent journalists at risk of persecution, imprisonment and even physical harm. A series of recent legislative initiatives compound this pressure by creating new ways for the Russian authorities and law enforcement bodies to impose censorship and self-censorship, further stifling public criticism and dissent. In conversation with Sergey Parkhomenko, lawyers and human rights leaders Ivan Pavlov and Pavel Chikov and prominent investigative journalist Roman Anin will discuss the state of independent media in Russia, the survival strategies of professional journalists in a hostile political environment and the effects of new legislation on free speech.
