Memory Laws in the Age of Populism: The Politics of the Past in Russia and Eastern Europe
April 29, 2019, 2:00-3:15pm (RSVP required)
5th Floor Conference Room, Wilson Center, 1300 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC
Join the Wilson Center's Kennan Institute for a discussion on memory politics and laws in Russia and Eastern Europe. Memory wars have become a characteristic aspect of central and East European domestic and international politics. Some countries—especially right-wing populists and authoritarian regimes—use law to promote nationalist mobilization and to whitewash their countries’ history. Nikolay Koposov of Emory University will discuss how the laws in the region compare to memory laws elsewhere and how they affect these countries’ ability to deal with the past. RSVP is required.
Speakers:
Nikolay Koposov, visiting scholar, Emory University
Kathleen Smith, professor of teaching, School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University
