Pipelines and Politics

Join the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard University for a workshop on the geopolitics of energy in Eurasia.

Pipelines are inherently political, “…veins of geopolitical power.” Russia, rich with energy resources, holds the largest natural gas reserves in the world and is in the top ten nations for known oil reserves. How does Russia use these reserves to their political advantage in Europe and Eurasia? How does energy demand impact international relations in the region? Our spring teacher workshop will consider exactly these questions. Participating educators will also have the opportunity to participate in a negotiation simulation around pipelines, considering strategies from various national perspectives when it comes to laying oil pipelines.

This workshop, intended for high school and community college educators, will consist of three distinct parts:

  1. A pre-recorded video interview with Dr. Rawi Abdelal regarding the geopolitics of energy in Eurasia, which will be made available to registrants in early May.
  2. A live Q&A conversation with Dr. Abdelal on Wednesday, May 19, 2021 at 4pm EDT.
  3. negotiation simulation around pipelines with Dr. Arvid Bell, Director of the Negotiation Task Force, on Wednesday, May 26, 2021 at 3:30pm EDT.

To register, please complete this registration form—you do not need to register separately for the two live events.
