The Impact of War and Decolonization on Russian Studies in the United States

Nov. 6, 2023
Hybrid

Russia’s full-scale war on Ukraine and the associated surge of calls to decolonize research and teaching on Russia within American universities have posed significant challenges to the existing paradigms of Russian studies. Professor Ted Gerber will examine the impact on the field because of the war and push for decolonization, as well as COVID-19, based on an assessment by Gerber and Michael Zaslavsky conducted on behalf of the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies in 2022 with funding from Carnegie Corporation of New York. The project is the result of interviews, focus groups, and two surveys of researchers in various disciplines who have worked on Russia during the last five years from within the United States.

Speaker: Theodore P. Gerber, Conway-Bascom Professor of Sociology; Director, Wisconsin Russia Project, University of Wisconsin-Madison

Moderator: William E. Pomeranz Director, Kennan Institute
