Kiev, Moscow, Constantinople: Ecclesial Aspects of Ukrainian Politics

Sept. 19, 2018, 12:00-1:00pm
Room S354, CGIS South Building, 1730 Cambridge St., Cambridge, MA

Join Harvard's Davis Center for a seminar with Thomas Bremer on the ecclesial dimension of the strained relations between Russia and Ukraine.

Orthodoxy in Ukraine is split; one branch of it is part of the Russian Orthodox Church. Ukrainian governments and presidents since the independence of the country have tried to reach an independent national Orthodox Church. Earlier this year, even Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and the Ukrainian parliament called upon the Ecumenical Patriarch in Constantinople for granting independence to Orthodoxy in Ukraine. This presentation will seek to shed light on this complicated situation which implies national and international political politics as well as the self-understanding of the Church.

Speaker

Thomas Bremer, professor of Eastern Churches studies, Münster University, Germany
